I didn’t chose hormones specifically, it found me. I applied for a neuroscience based PhD that was looking at diabetes. I wanted to do something neuroscience related and liked the sound of the project. That’s how I ended up in diabetes research.

I kind of fell into this area of science. I previously worked in microbiology with viruses and bacteria but I saw a job in reproductive medicine. I didn’t know much about it (it’s not one of the standard departments for a Biomedical Scientist) but applied anyway. I was lucky enough to get it and couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.

Like the Amy and Laura I sort of fell into hormones but they are so fascinating. They affect most systems of our bodies such as our kidneys, heart, circulation, brain, testes, ovaries, metabolism – you name it they are there! And when you have an endocrine disorder it can often affect your physical appearance. Students love hearing about hormones!
