I was fascinated by the human body and how it worked, and wanted to know more. I wanted to have a career I would find interesting and one that would challenge me mentally.

I have always loved science and chose to study the subject through my GCSEs, A levels and university. It felt like a natural step to take the knowledge I had learnt and apply it to a career in scientific research.

I sort of fell into it. Was going to be a nurse, but too young at 16 when I left school. Did a secretarial course and then went to America where I got a job as secretary to a professor at MIT. I wanted to wear a white coat so asked the professor if I could be his lab technician instead of his secretary! Got interested in science, came back to the UK, another job as a lab technician while I went to night school to do my A levels. Then got into Uni and then went to Canada to do my PhD. And so it all started. This is a true story!
