Glycogen is mainly stored in the liver, muscle and fat. Insulin stimulates the uptake of glucose into these organs and the glucose is converted to glycogen. When we need more sugar in our blood the glycogen is converted back into glucose and released into the circulation. This is stimulated by the hormone glucagon which like insulin is released from the pancreas
