There are three main types of hormones in terms of their chemistry.
Peptides or proteins which an range from a mere 3 amino acids to around 200 amino acids. Secondly steroids which are all synthesised from cholesterol and finally catecholamines (e.g. adrenaline) thyroid hormones and melatonin which are made from a single amino i.e. tyrosine or melatonin.
There a locally acting hormones such as prostaglandins which are made from fatty acids.
