People often see type 2 diabetes as a ‘mild’ condition. It certainly isn’t. It can contribute to many health problems including loss of eye sight, increased risk of stroke, kidney failure, poor wound healing (which means some people with type 2 diabetes have to have limbs removed) and even death. As the disease progresses quality of life drops.
It costs the NHS £8.8 billion to treat T2D directly plus £13.9 billion for indirect costs per year (illness, time off work and complications).
Not all lost as early on in the condition, T2D can be reversed for some by losing weight and eating a healthier diet.
