Beta cells in the pancreas release insulin and years of overproduction of insulin (hyperinsulinemia) can wear out the beta cells. This would cause a decrease in insulin production to increase in blood sugar level, leading to diabetes. In women, it can lead to polycystic ovary syndrome and may find it difficult getting pregnant. Diabetes and being overweight can increase the risk of heart disease.
