I guess it depends on how you define important. I have discovered many different pieces of knowledge which currently may not seem ground breaking (I.e. Not going to win the Nobel Prize or anything!) but do contribute to the knowledge of the field. I have 5 published papers which is one of the goals of a scientist – sharing your knowledge with others.
I don’t know if I’ve made an “important” discovery but I have contributed to allow further research. I carried out research looking at the prevalence of hepatitis E among Scottish blood donors. Hep E wasn’t a well known virus but now there is question over should blood donors get tested for it because of what I found out.
