(1) Get your qualifications at school – work hard!
(2) Complete the science degree relating to your area of interest and additional qualifications or certificates when necessary – work harder!
(3) Get work experience in a variety of lab settings. For me, I gained a lot of really useful knowledge and experience by working in different types of lab. This made me know for sure what I wanted to end up in. If you know what kind of work you want to end up in, you’ll be happier and really motivated – I think this is a very important aspect of being a good scientist.
(4) Open your mind and be willing to accept changes, and question why you are testing something in a certain way….is there a better way…..what else can I do?
(5) Understand that experiments do not necessarily work out first time round….or second or third sometimes.
(6) Be organised and particular – nothing wrong with a perfectionist!
(7) Be happy in your job, motivated, continue to learn (this is a must in science).
