According to the book ‘The Selfish Gene’ by Richard Dawkins it is to reproduce to pass on your genetic material onto future generations. Quite a cold sounding answer but it is one. There can be many, many philosophical answers to this question, for example, to be happy, live a fulfilling life contributing to the world or it may just be 42……..

      Nice answer Amy.

I agree – enjoy yourself would be a good objective.

Also agree with Amy. Traditionally the objective was said to be to reproduce but nowadays there’s so much more and having fun and being happy is an important objective of life.

Very deep and interesting question and agree that it is to reproduce. I have done my reproducing having passed on my genes to three boys so does that make me completely redundant now, biologically speaking?! I like to think I can still make a contribution to my family both emotionally and practically and and give something back to society which overall has treated me very well. A wise thought from an elder, you only get out of life what you put into it.
